Al Amir Hussein uses Art to Reflect his Mixed Cultural Influences

October 29, 2019

Al Amir Hussein was born in Mombasa, Kenya. He originates from the original Swahili tribe, and grew up playing on the influence of Arabic history in Old Town Mombasa.

With a vast cultural mix, the east coast of Kenya and Tanzania was colonized by Omani Arabs and Portuguese, leaving its traces all over the place. Nowadays the streets of Old Mombasa still show the Latin and Arab architecture and cultural influences.

Through his work it is clearly noticeble that Al Amir reflects the vast history of his East African coast and the influences it had on his powers of perception and his color taste.

To this day little has changed in the Old Town – the narrow streets, the radiant white walls  and the ornate woodwork of the doors.
