Alive in Joburg is a Canadian and South African science-fiction short film written and directed by Neill Blomkamp. The film addresses themes of apartheid and is remarkably done for its visual effects as well as its documentary perspectives.
In 1990, Johannesburg is home to extraterrestrial refugees, whose large spaceships are hovering above the city. In the beginning, they were received with open arms, however, the situation rapidly escalates, as the aliens begin to move into other areas of the city. Soon, they start committing crimes to survive and clash with the local police.
Playing as a documentary, the film shows interviews and footage taken from handheld cameras and highlights the growing tension between Earth civilians and extraterrestrial visitors.
Starring in the film is Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, and Dawie Ackermann.
