C.J. Obasi’s Short Film “Hello, Rain” Based On Nnedi Okorafor’s “Hello, Moto”

The trailer for “Hello, Rain,” directed by filmmaker C.J. “Fiery” Obasi, is an afrofuturistic short film based on Nnedi Okorafor’s short story “Hello, Moto.”

Obasi’s big wish has finally come true. Clearly, he’d be dying to adapt Okorafor’s work for a while. He decided to work on something rather small, but completely different from what he’s used to.

Obasi tells the story of Rain, a woman who creates magical wigs for her friends. Then again, black women’s hair is the center of the narrative, and that issue is one of the most common thematics in Africa.

Obasi’s desire to emphasize African beauty and to make it look cool and sexy is huge. Obasi says “I just feel like it is important that we tell alternative African stories, and that they become mainstream-we need to inspire this generation and the next to see blackness and humanity in a different and true light.”
