Nigerian Actress Cynthia Erivo Is Nominated For The Oscars As “Best Actress”

Actress Cynthia Erivo has been nominated for the Oscars as „Best Actress“ and as „Best Original Song“ for her brilliant performance by „Harriet.“ Erivo portrayed the slave-turned abolitionist Harriet Tubman, for which she also earned nominations for a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Born in London from Nigerian parents, Erivo initially studied music psychology, however, a year into her degree, she trained in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Later she made a Broadway debut before she hit the big screen.

Erivo actress skills are evident onscreen at the thriller „Bad Times at the El Royale“ and the action film „Widows“. Erivo is also a theater and musical actress, so we can experience her in roles such as Celia Harris in the „The Color Purple“ or Sister Mary Clarence/Deloris Van Cartier on the Musical „Sister Act“.

For the revival of „The Color Purple“, she won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in the musical, The Grammy Award for Best Musical and the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Musical Performance.

Besides portraying Harriet, Erivo also received a second nomination for Best Original Song, for a song she co-wrote and performed for the film entitled „Stand Up“.

In January 2020, the miniseries „The Outsider“, a television adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, premiered in HBO and Erivo stars as investigator Holly Gibney.
