Zambian filmmaker Rungano Nyoni grew up in Wales with dreams of acting, only to soon be drawn behind the camera. She debuted her amazing first feature at the Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight to widespread acclaim.
„I Am Not a Witch,“ is about a nine-year-old girl accused of witchcraft by her own villagers, blends dark humour, social critique and sensitive storytelling. The film’s young protagonist is soon exposed by her caretaker around local courts and TV stations, but her rebellious spirit remains invincible.
Although Nyoni drew from her visit to one of Ghana’s real “witch camps”, she also come up with magical realist elements that completed the film’s compelling visuals and communicate her worries about the oppression of women.
